FIlezilla FTP error GnuTLS error -12: A TLS fatal alert

Filezilla Error gnuTLS error- 12

Following a recent update by Filezilla for the very popular Filezilla FTP Client, some people are reporting that when FTP’ing to servers (usually shared hosting) they are receiving the error message above.

Additionally you may randomly see this error:

filezilla error

These errors are caused by a Self Signed Certificate being used to secure the FTP TLS connection.

This error will not occur if a Standard SSL (non self-signed) certificate is used.

To get round this, you need to add the FTP site into Filezilla’s Site Manager, then edit the site to force the connection type:

Once this is done, Filezilla should connect fine.
